How to Paint 3D Printed Model Railroad Buildings

Introduction

Painting your 3D printed model railroad buildings is one of the most rewarding parts of layout building — it’s the moment a bare gray print becomes a weathered brick mill, a sun-faded depot, or a soot-stained engine house. The print gives you the shape; paint gives it a history.

The goal with structures isn’t a flawless, factory-fresh finish — it’s believability at viewing distance. Real buildings are faded, streaked, and grimy, and the techniques below are built to reproduce that look in layers anyone can follow. We’ll cover both FDM and resin prints, and the order matters, so work top to bottom.

What You’ll Need

Prep & prime

  • Fine sanding sticks & a hobby knife
  • Mild dish soap + an old toothbrush
  • Plastic-safe primer (gray, white, oxide red)

Color

  • Acrylic paints (brick, stone, wood, metal tones)
  • A light buff or gray for mortar
  • Dark washes for shading

Weathering

  • Weathering powders / pastel chalks
  • A stiff brush for drybrushing
  • Rust and grime tones

Finish & detail

  • Clear glazing for windows
  • Fine detail brush
  • Matte clear coat (a flat “dullcote” sealer)

Step 1: Clean & Prime

Paint is only as good as the surface under it. Wash the print in mild soap and warm water with an old toothbrush to lift mold-release, oils, and dust, then let it dry fully. On resin prints, make sure the piece is washed and cured first; on FDM, knock down layer lines on flat, prominent walls with light sanding (rough stone and roof texture usually hides them).

Then prime with a plastic-safe primer in thin, even coats — several light passes beat one heavy one, which fills the crisp detail you printed the building for. Choose the primer color to do some of the work for you:

  • Gray — the neutral all-rounder for stone, concrete, and mixed structures.
  • Oxide red — a head start under brick buildings.
  • White — for light colors like clapboard, stucco, and signage you want to stay bright.

Clean surfaces improve primer adhesion and paint durability — this is the least glamorous step and the one that separates lasting paint from flaky paint.


Step 2: Base Coat

Apply thin coats of acrylic to lay down the main color of each material — brick red, concrete gray, weathered wood, rusted metal. Thin coats preserve fine detail; thick ones turn crisp clapboard into a plastic blob.

Block in the large areas first and pick out trim, doors, and roofing afterward. Keep colors slightly muted — few real buildings are saturated, and the weathering layers to come will knock everything back further anyway.


Step 3: Mortar & Joint Lines

This is the step that makes a brick or stone structure look real, and it’s pure model-railroad magic: paint the brick, flood the joints with a contrasting mortar color, then wipe the faces clean so the mortar stays only in the recesses.

The mortar technique in three moves: paint the brick, flood a thin mortar-color wash over everything, then wipe the brick faces — the mortar stays in the joints.

Use a thin buff or light-gray wash for mortar, work in small sections, and wipe with a barely damp cloth or your fingertip before it fully sets. The same trick works for stone block, concrete panels, and plank siding — anywhere the joints should read darker or lighter than the surface.


Step 4: Weathering

This is where realism happens. Dry brushing and washes simulate age, dirt, and wear — but the secret is knowing where grime actually collects. Real weathering follows gravity and use:

  • Washes settle into recesses for instant depth and grime.
  • Drybrushing a lighter tone over raised brick, trim, and clapboard pops the texture.
  • Rust streaks run downward from metal fittings, gutters, and downspouts.
  • Water stains streak down beneath window sills and ledges.
  • Soot gathers around chimneys and along the roof.
  • Dust and splash collect at the base where the wall meets the ground.

Where weathering actually lands: soot up top, rust below metal, water stains under sills, and dirt at the base.

Mind the scale effect

Colors and contrast appear softer with distance, and a model viewed across a layout is “far away” in scale terms. The smaller the scale, the more restraint: weathering that looks right in O scale will look overdone in N. Build it up gradually and stop sooner than you think — you can always add another pass.


Step 5: Glazing & Final Details

Small touches sell the structure. Add clear glazing behind the window openings — a sheet of clear plastic or a gloss medium reads as glass and instantly lifts the whole building. Then pick out the details that catch the eye: door hardware, signage, roofing seams, and a hint of interior color or shading behind the windows.

This is also the moment for a gloss touch where it belongs — wet spots, glass, and polished metal — before everything gets knocked back to matte in the final step.


Step 6: Seal

Finish with a matte clear coat for protection. Beyond guarding your work, a flat finish kills the plastic sheen that screams “model” — it’s what makes painted resin or filament read as real brick, wood, and stone.

  • Apply in light coats, the same as primer; heavy clear can frost or pool.
  • Keep gloss reserved for glass and wet effects, then matte the rest.
  • In cold or humid conditions, spray sealers can fog white — warm the room and the can first.

Final Thought

Painting transforms a printed model into a realistic miniature structure — a building with a past that earns its place on the layout. Prime clean, base thin, line the mortar, weather to taste, and seal it flat, and the results will look right at any viewing distance.
